Before practicing as a cardiologist, physicians must graduate from medical school, complete a residency and become board-certified in internal medicine, and then complete a fellowship in cardiology. Cardiology residencies typically last three years, and fellowships are a minimum of three years, making at least six years of training beyond medical school. The roles and responsibilities of a cardiologist can vary, but certain generalities are possible.
Salary:In the United States, the median cardiologist salary is reported to be $375,000 per year. The figure for the lowest 10th percentile is $251,000 per year and for the highest 10th percentile, the figure is reported to be $550,000. The middle 50% earns from $310,000 to $466,000. The above figures are for invasive cardiologists. For non-invasive cardiologist, the median annual salary is reported to be $346,000. The lowest 10th percentile earns about $221,000 and the highest 10th percentile earns about $484,000 per year.
Education:First, an aspiring cardiologist must have a bachelor's degree in order to get into medical school. The most logical pre-med bachelor degrees include courses in chemistry, mathematics, engineering or psychology. Then one must gain a passing score on the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).
The four years in medical school covers standard medical terminology, medical judgment and clinical standard procedures. Potential cardiologists who complete the ten years of educational preparation must then pass an exam administered by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
