Dental assistant
Duties and Responsibilities:assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures.taking and developing dental radiography (x-rays)asking about the patient's medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse.serving as an infection control officer, developing infection control protocol and preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment.helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling).teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health;(e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling).
Salary:The pay scale for dental assistants ranges from about $23,550 to $47,580. In 2012, the average pay for dental assistants was $35,080 and the median pay was $34,500.
Education:A skilled dental assistant can make all the difference in a patient’s dental experience. The Westwood College dental assisting degree will give you the skills and training you will need to support dentists and help provide quality dental care to patients. The Dental Assisting Associate of Applied Science program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to work as a chair-side dental assistant in general and specialty practices. Each student receives hands-on experience in at least two different dental office/clinics.
